NTT Com Offers Free WLAN for Specific Internet Services
- Free Uploading of Videos and Photos via Eye-Fi Cards
TOKYO, JAPAN - NTT Communications (NTT Com) launched today "HOTSPOT connect," a new service offering free connectivity to specific Internet services via HOTSPOT™, NTT Com’s public wireless local area network (WLAN) in Japan. HOTSPOT connect is available to anyone, including nonsubscribers to HOTSPOT, normally a paid service.
The first offering, "HOTSPOT connect x Eye-Fi," allows users to upload photos and videos from cameras, camcorders and other portable devices that are equipped with either the Eye-Fi Share or Eye-Fi Share Video, which are standard-sized SD memory cards with built-in Wi-Fi capability and marketed by Eye-Fi Japan K. K. in Japan. Users are expected to upload content for online sharing or storage.
HOTSPOT connect is accessible in some parts of standard service areas of HOTSPOT nationwide, including all Toei subway stations in the Tokyo area.
In the future, HOTSPOT connect will support additional Internet services and websites, providing users with convenient wireless connection to the Internet away from the home or office.
HOTSPOT connect is expected to create business opportunities for online service providers, who will use the service to attract the increasing number of people carrying WLAN-compatible devices, such as laptops, iPod touch®, iPhone™ 3G, digital cameras, handheld game consoles and netbooks.
HOTSPOT connect x Eye-Fi will be demonstrated during the Interop TOKYO 2009 trade show at Makuhari Messe near Tokyo between June 10 and 12 (www.interop.jp/en).
Daisuke Tanaka, managing director of Eye-Fi Japan K. K., a leading provider of products and services that help consumers navigate, nurture and share their visual memories, says: "We’re proud to be the first company to provide Internet services via HOTSPOT connect, a new service from NTT Com that will expand the wireless Internet market. Our collaboration with NTT Com will enable customers to enjoy their visual experiences over wireless broadband both in and out of the home. HOTSPOT connect will make it easier than ever to share photos and videos before reaching home, a significant enhancement of the Eye-Fi experience in Japan."
