NTT Com to Launch Data Center in Tokyo Area
as Key Platform for Cloud Services
TOKYO, JAPAN - NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) announced today that it has begun constructing the Tokyo No. 6 Data Center, which will begin operating by June 2013 as one of the largest data centers in the Tokyo metropolitan area, boasting 22,000 square meters of floor space capable of accommodating some 3,000 server racks.
The new facility will seamlessly offer NTT Com’s cloud services to customers in Japan and around the world, provided through virtualized networks using the OpenFlow standard and other technologies to enable flexible, on-demand management of system configurations.
NTT Com, a highly experienced operator of data centers in more than 100 locations worldwide, including five facilities in the Tokyo, decided to build its new state-of-the-art data center in response to increasing demand envisioned in Tokyo area. The new data center will feature high cost-effectiveness and great flexibility to accommodate a wide range of customer needs for equipment, systems and operations.
Primary features
1. Central location and high cost effectiveness
Just seven minutes’ walk from nearest train station and accessible from several other stations. World-class, space-saving design based on large rotary UPS [d1]for operational cost-savings that can be passed on to customers.
2. Customizable facilities and operations
Requirements for air conditioning, fire prevention, electric supply, security, miscellaneous facilities and operations can be customized flexibly to meet the high-level needs of financial institutions and other customers.
3. High-level countermeasures for disasters
Seismic-isolation architecture capable of withstanding even the 9.0-magnitude earthquake experienced in Japan in March 2011 can reduce seismic shocks to one-fifth of maximum force for minimized effect on the structure housing servers and customer equipment. The site, built on stable, hard ground, is 10 km from Tokyo Bay and 1.5 km from the closest river. Flood-prevention measures protect against rainstorms, tsunami and storm surge.
4. Japan’s highest level of power usage effectiveness (PUE)
A high 1.2 PUE rating will be achieved by using a water-cooled air conditioner with high energy efficiency, rotary UPS with low electricity loss, cooling system using outdoor air to reduce electricity consumption, and highly efficient electrical facilities.
5. On-site annex for customer offices
An on-site annex measuring 2,000 square meters will be available for use as offices where customers can monitor/maintain systems and strengthen their business-continuity plans.
6. Scalable, high-quality network connections
In addition to NTT Com’s high-speed, large-capacity Internet backbone and complementary network services including Arcstar™ Universal One, the Inter-Data Center Connectivity Service will provide links to data centers in Tokyo and overseas for flexible system expansion.
7. Comprehensive platform for cloud services
Linkage to NTT Com’s Arcstar™ Universal One will provide seamless access to cloud services without connection charges. When combined with a virtualized network, cloud resources can be extended beyond the data center and data can be transferred easily and on demand to remote locations during a disaster or pandemic.
