その後、Jリーグの札幌や横浜での監督を経て、2007年から再び日本代表監督を務め、2010年のW杯南アフリカ大会でチームをベスト16に導く。
中国サッカー・スーパーリーグ、杭州緑城の監督を経て、2014年11月、四国リーグ(現在J3所属)FC今治のオーナーに就任。
日本サッカー界の「育成改革」、そして「地方創生」に情熱を注いでいる。 Born in 1956. Graduated from Osaka Prefectural Tennoji High School and Waseda University's School of Political Science and Economics. Belonged to the university's Association Football Club. After graduating from university, joined Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. and was selected for the Japan national football team. After retirement, served as a club team coach, and became the manager of the Japan national team in 1997, achieving Japan's first-ever qualification for the World Cup finals.
Afterwards, after coaching J League teams in Sapporo and Yokohama, again served as the manager of the Japan national team from 2007, and led the team to the Round of 16 in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
After coaching Zhejiang Professional F.C. in the Chinese Super League, became the owner of FC Imabari in the Shikoku League (currently in J3) in November 2014.
He is passionately devoted to “youth development reform” in Japanese football and “regional revitalization.”
