NTT Communications Announces Future Plan of
Data Center Business

NTT Communications (NTT Com) will begin in April, both within Japan and overseas, offering its core solution in support of E-business for corporations, Arcstar Data Center Service.

With this service, NTT Com will be able to offer, both domestically and internationally, a one-stop solution for companies ranging from home offices to multinational corporations.

As the Internet becomes a platform for society and the economy, the integration of networks with information technology (IT) will enable transactions that go beyond conventional frameworks and provide companies with new business opportunities. As this has happened, NTT Com has been providing housing (co-location) services, hosting services and other services from NTT Com buildings in 23 locations nationwide, including from Tokyo (Otemachi) and Osaka (Dojima). In order to accommodate corporate needs focused on concentrating management resources on their core competencies, which has resulted from the recent dramatic expansion of the e-business market, the company will offer its Arcstar Data Center Service, a one-stop solution integrating server operation, platform functionality, housing services and other services. The Arcstar Data Center Service will offer services essential to linking corporations with their customers, suppliers and partners and ensuring success in e-business.

The Arcstar Data Center Service is based in a facility that offers a high level of security, stability of operation, scalability, and resistance to earthquakes, and offers the following services.

-A network service directly connected to the NTT Com backbone.
-A service that enables transactions within environments containing a variety of IT and non-IT terminals and between companies with different systems (access gateway service).
-A server hosting service allowing customers to use servers and applications installed and operated at NTT Com from remote locations.
-An user ID service that verifies users have access authorization and prevents unauthorized access.
-A service that manages at NTT Com enterprise-wide security for servers and databases spread out in various customer locations.
-A settlement service and a settlement gateway service enabling integrated usage of multiple settlement services.
-A comprehensive operation and management service covering everything from the network to IT.

Specific NTT Com initiatives aimed at bringing the Arcstar Data Center Service include its establishment of a new E-platform Service Department, and by initially offering a server hosting service and comprehensive operation and management service, the company will successively roll out expanded data center solutions. To make this all possible, in addition to offering conventional IT network services, NTT Com is partnering with Computer Associates Inc., IBM Corp. and Tivoli Corp. to offer its IT total operation and management service. It will form partnerships with a wide range of leading consulting companies and IT vendors to further expand its services.

NTT Com will expand its domestic service bases to major cities across Japan during fiscal 2000. In order to meet the global needs of firms seeking business expansion in Asia, the US, and Europe, NTT Com plans to collaborate with its overseas alliances including telecommunications carriers, ISPs, and local subsidiaries, to provide a one-stop data center service. In the US, new data centers will be opened in San Jose and Manhattan during the first quarter of fiscal 2000. In Asia, data center service will be provided within a year in Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Philippines, Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan and others. In Europe, data center service will be provided in London, Paris, Frankfurt and others.

NTT Com plans to hold an "Arcstar Data Center Seminar" at the San Jose Hilton & Tower on March 16, US local time. In such ways, NTT Com will aggressively attract US firms to its Arcstar Data Center Service, and support US firms with an interest in establishing a business base in Japan and Asia. The topic of the seminar is: "Leveling the Playing Field: How Internet and Telecommunications Technologies Are Enabling Asia-Pacific Expansion for Emerging Businesses." There will be panelists present from Asia- and US-based dot com business companies and consulting firms, and the discussion will focus on issues that face US firms trying to extend business to Japan and Asia. Over 100 participants are expected, mostly from the West Coast, and include those from such firms as US multinational companies, dot com firms, and application service providers (ASPs).
