FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NTT Communications to Launch World’s First
Global Transparent LAN Ethernet Service

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) announced today that it plans to launch the world’s first global-scale transparent LAN Ethernet service*1 spanning 54 countries. The Arcstar Global e-VLAN Package will include domestic and global Arcstar network services, Ethernet switch rental and co-location for the construction of global intranets. Service starts February 21, 2002.

NTT Com’s e-VLAN service was previously available only in Japan.

The new service realizes a LAN environment to join multiple offices, as well as high-quality broadband closed network communications at 10Mbps and 100Mbps. It is particularly well suited to multinational corporations that require enhanced broadband connectivity.

High levels of service quality and reliability are assured through redundant network construction and web-based reporting. A wide range of service-level agreements (SLAs) is available.

The global e-VLAN service is simple to set up and helps to minimize both capital-investment and operational costs. It works with existing LAN environments and equipment. LANs are simply plugged into the global Arcstar network to connect with other overseas offices. Users can further reduce the costs of network operation and management by combining the service with NTT Com’s data center services.

The service offers a high level of customization, accommodating protocols such as IPv4*2 and IPv6*3 over a single network, SNA*4, IPX*5 and Apple Talk*6. IP routing protocols include RIP*7, OSPF*8, EIGRP*9 and more.

The service realizes a seamless, high-quality global network by working with a variety of access networks, including NTT Com’s global frame-relay, domestic e-VLAN, ATM and IP-VPN networks, as well as Ethernet networks of local carriers.

If required, NTT Com can rapidly construct new networks or enhance existing networks, such as adding an office base or increasing network speed. All work is capably supported by the firm’s gigabit-sized backbones in Asia, the U.S. and Europe.

NTT Com will be the sole operator of both domestic and global networks and equipment. End-to-end global network surveillance and 24/7 monitoring will be available in a one-stop ordering, billing and maintenance package.

Notes:

*1Transparent LAN Ethernet: Transparent LAN communications service based on Ethernet technology. Set up of an Ethernet switch is necessary.
*2IPv4: Internet protocol version 4. Has 32-bit address space.
*3IPv6: Internet protocol version 6, the next-generation IP protocol. Address space is increased to 132, providing for an unlimited number of IP addresses.
*4SNA: IBM’s networking protocol.
*5IPX: Network layer protocol of Novell, Inc.
*6Apple Talk: Macintosh LAN protocol of Apple Computer, Inc.
*7RIP: Protocol for exchanging routing information.
*8OSPF: Routing protocol for large-scale IP networks.
*9EIGRP: Routing protocol in IP network autonomous system.
